Misconceptions About God Series
We live in a culture where you can customize just about anything—your coffee, your playlist, your phone case, even your burger order. And somewhere along the line, people started trying to customize God too.
But let’s say it plainly:
God is not whatever you want Him to be.
He’s not clay in our hands—we’re clay in His.
I’ve heard people say things like,
“Well, my God would never judge anyone.”
Or, “To me, God is more of a force… like energy.”
Or, “I just don’t think God really cares about how we live, as long as we’re happy.”
Let me be kind—but direct: your opinion of God doesn’t change who He is. You can invent your own version of God, sure—but that’s called idolatry. And it’s just as dangerous now as it was when people were carving golden calves.
The real God—the God of the Bible—isn’t up for revision.
He’s holy.
He’s loving.
He’s just.
He’s merciful.
He’s a consuming fire.
And He’s not asking for a rebrand.
We don’t get to cherry-pick the parts of God’s character that make us feel good and ignore the ones that call us to repentance. We don’t get to rewrite the gospel so it’s more comfortable. And we don’t get to soften sin just because it hits close to home.
God reveals Himself in His Word. Period.
And our job isn’t to edit Him—it’s to know Him.
The good news? He wants to be known. Not the version we make up—but the real, living, holy, gracious, powerful, present, personal God.
Let’s not settle for a God made in our image.
Let’s worship the One who made us in His.
