Misconceptions About God Series
It’s no secret—I love this country. I’ve got family who’ve served in the military. I’ve sung the national anthem at events. I’m grateful for the freedoms we still enjoy. But let’s get one thing straight:
God is not an American.
Somewhere along the line, a lot of Christians got the idea that revival means turning America back into 1950. As if we can just rewind the culture, clean up the airwaves, and poof—revival! But that’s not how it works. Revival isn’t God blessing our nation again because we finally passed the right laws or got the right people in office.
Revival doesn’t start in Washington. It starts in your heart.
And that’s a whole lot harder than voting.
Some folks can’t read 2 Chronicles 7:14 without picturing an American flag waving behind the pulpit. “If my people… will humble themselves and pray…”—that verse is thrown around like it’s a magic formula to restore national greatness. But here’s the thing: that promise was made to Israel, not to the United States.
Now, are there principles we can learn from it? Absolutely. God still responds to humility and repentance. But we’ve got to stop thinking of America as God’s “chosen nation.” The people of God today are not defined by geography. They’re defined by faith in Christ.
And let me be honest—it’s easier to get fired up about “saving America” than it is to deal with the bitterness in our own hearts. It’s easier to blame “the world out there” than to let God do surgery on the sin in our own lives.
I love my country. But my citizenship is in Heaven.
And God doesn’t take sides—He takes over.
Let’s stop trying to sprinkle a little Jesus on our patriotism and call it revival. Let’s seek the real thing. God’s not waiting for America to shape up. He’s waiting for His people to get honest.
