God Wants Me to Be Happy, Right?
Does God want you to be happy or holy? The person asking this question is usually seeking to justify a sinful lifestyle. Must I soldier on in difficult circumstances and be miserable, or does God want me to be happy and does that justify my behavior?
The answer is twofold. First, the question presents a false choice. There is no true happiness apart from holiness. We may make choices we think will make us happy, but they lead to guilt and chastening. If we want to be happy, we must be holy.
Second, happiness isn’t about our circumstances. God’s priority isn’t about us at all. Holy living brings glory to God, which is the highest good. Our happiness is a byproduct of that good. The more we know and love our Savior, the greater our delight will be in obeying Him.
