God Helps Those Who Help Themselves
This phrase, often attributed to Ben Franklin, suggests that if we want help from God, we must meet him halfway. The idea became popular among deists, who believe God rarely intervenes in human affairs, but the Bible tells a different story.
Romans 3 teaches that we can’t help ourselves. “There is none that doeth good; no, not one.” Salvation is all of grace, not of works. Even after salvation, it is the Holy Spirit who works in us to bear fruit.
That’s not to say that we have no responsibility. The Bible does teach that obedience is necessary to the Christian life. Perhaps a better way to phrase the idea that we must participate with God is to say that God blesses Christians who obey.
